Yet more rodents
Leon Uris in one of his novels (I think its EXODUS)uses a rat as an instrument of torture. Inserted anally, then victim tied up in a burlap sack and left in the desert. Could this be the Genesis of the rodent in the rear saga????

bums and rodents
Its an urban myth the old hamster, gerbil rodent in the back passage caper. No reports in any medical journal of anyone removing a small furry creature from the bum. Check out www.snopes.2.com/ the Urban legend page for further details, use search and type in "rodent"

rodents......
When the net was young the rodent story was one of the first to lap the globe (no pun or double meaning). The original story concerned two Californian gentlemen who practised what was then an 'alternantive lifestyle' in the forerunner of PC. Both were admitted to an Ca. E.R. having come to grief while 'exercising' their pet. The story went that one of the gentlemen derived something more than comfort from having their pet hampster introduced to his back passage via a tiolet roll center. The said pets scurrying was purported to have caused a state of sexual nirvana, all well an good so far. However on this occassion, the furry invader had gone too far, and could not be retrieved despite the efforts of the gentlemen. The 'handler' then decided to investigate and lacking a torch decided to illuminate the scene with a match. Tragically, the resulting methane driven detonation did not serve to merely encourage the rodent to leave his new home; it literally blew him out. He arrived on the bridge of the handler's nose with enough force to shatter it and end his own life while the explosion turned ecstacy into agony. Probably a load of old hamsters, but it made a few of the geeks I knew chuckle.

Drug error
Not your fault then the nurse who gave you the meds is to blame. So not your problem although I'm sure you still feel bad about it. Mistakes are the best ways to learn as you don't forget them in a hurry.

premature death...
To hopelessly paraphrase Mr Twain, rumours of my disappearance are greatly exaggerated. I have qualified, though it took a resit and a lot of necessary humility and fawning to make good three years of criticising the system. The net result has been that I have already been called into the G grades office for 'attitude readjustment' for, you guessed it, criticising the system. I was the highly amused recipient of one of the worst, rambling mostly apologetic attempted bollickings in history! I am not notoriously humble, and on this occassion did not feel the need to be as the department has leaked about 30 staff in the period since Christmas. Perhaps it is not only me that is the problem but I will admit that I am more than happy to remind the people who get paid very handsomely to manage that they ought to do what their title suggests and manage. The ones I am currently working for could not 'manage' to hit water if they fell out of a boat. More cynicism later... Good luck to those sweating their time out, if nothing else the wages of sin are slightly higher.

Hobbes, basically a staff nurse handed me a bag of pills to give to a patient who was going home. But the staff nurse had not checked them herself and had given me another patients tablets. I should have checked them for myself but regretfully didn't. Fortunately no harm was done. I have learnt to never trust anyone however superior and experienced.

Drug errors
Dear Claire, you don't say what the error was or the effect. Anyhow, yes I've made them and I don't know anyone who has'nt, if the client ok then just move on, don't beat yourself up over it. When your doing meds in future, just double check them before handing them out. Takes more time but is alot safer. If you were handing the drugs out to a runner, bad practice but it goes on, then make sure the runner knows who is who. I've made them as both a student and qualified. The student time I was under supervision, with a complete idiot who was talking very loudly and a couple of clients in the clinic who were quite agitated,(I work in metal health), and I ended up giving the wrong dose of an anti-depressant. When qualified, was in a similar situation, with a lot of people, in the clinic. Now I don't let anyone in when I'm doing meds, and I tell staff to keep it quite so I don't loose my concentration and I hav'nt made any mistakes since. But if one thing in life is certain its another cock-up on the meds front. So don't worry about it.

meds errors
Don't worry mate, eveyone's human. We all make mistakes at the best of times. I made a drug error under close supervision, and the patient was alright. No-one's perfect (especially me) and I doubt if any nurse has gone through their career without making a drug error. If you didn't make the odd mistake in life you'd get dead complacent and that could lead to a really major error later on. Just look at it as a learning experience and you'll be better for it. If you didn't have clouds you wouldn't appreciate the sun. On a lighter note, I STILL haven't spoken to Fiona, but I now have given away my real name. I guess there aren't many male students called Matt in Sept '99 group 3 adult branch at Winter street campus at the Uni of sheffield...

Overseas Student Nurses
over 50 UNISON nursing students protested outside St George's hospital, South London to protest at the ending of bursaries for overseas nursing students (in England Universities only). Its UNISON view that if the department of health are successful in abolishing the bursary for Irish, EU and overseas nursing students (on the grounds that it brings them into line with other students) then we are next. This is the inevitable consequence of not securing a living wage We have to fight this one and we can not afford to lose. Alice Dawnay UNISON Nursing Student Officer London

Meeting with sarah Mullally
Many of you will of read the news report in Nursing Times vol. 97 no.27 p7 headed "Students slam inadequate bursaries. This article is quite misleading and I would like to correct a few inaccuracies and clarify a few of the issues 1) Both the RCN ANS and Unison students attended the meeting and not just Unison students. 2) The meeting was arranged by the RCN ANS and not Unison. The ANS wrote to Sarah Mullally on 15 March and received a reply on 30 April stating that Sarah would meet with us but would like Unison to also be there "as it is very important that I here as wide an opinion base as possible". This meeting took place as reported on 10 July. I do have copies of the relevant correspondence. 3) An RCN member asked when the much talked about review of healthcare student funding would be published but we were given no firm commitment on this. 4) Funding wasn't the only issue discussed. For example there was in interesting discussion over changes to the rules for overseas students accessing the NHS bursary scheme. There was also much discussion on the quality of clinical placements both very important issues at this time. Finally I would just like to add that both RCN members and Unison members got on really well and it was great to share experiences and realise just how much we have in common and it is a pity that the Nursing Times chose to report the meeting in such a mis-leading and biased way.

To those about to qualify
Just some advice, when you qualify, your gonna have to wait around for your registration, this could take some time and you'll never get through to the UKCC either by phoning, fax or e-mail for them to tell you. So those with part-time jobs get the extra hours in or you'll add heaps to your already massive debt. I had to wait around two months before I had any money coming in after qualification. Also when you get a job get straight onto personal and the wages dept, make sure they have all the paperwork. I was working full-time for a month before admin realised that I'd got a job. Honest you'll be stressed as it is so make life alittle easier on yourself. Don't go through the hell I did. By the way don't stress out about being qualified you soon pick it up and until you do just act like you know what your doing. Make sure wherever you work has a preceptorship scheme and pick a mentor you feel comfortable with. Think hard about the decisions you make before you make them, don't rush around in a panic. Listen to what your collegues say, take notice of the N/A's, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you don't feel comfortable doing something don't do it. Also if your asked to do something thats abit dodgy think why you the inexperienced staff nurse has been asked to do it, remember everywhere has politics. Don't get into tribal warfare on the ward until you know whats what. Finally get to know your medication, read the BNF and if your mental health the Maudsley guide, training dos'nt teach you much about what pills look like or what dosage they are, find out what the meds your dealing with are supposed to do. Take your time doing meds even if its twice as long as everyone elses'. Don't be pressurised into rushing it by narky N/A's, remember its your registration. If a prescription sheet looks wrong then it probably is wrong, so get a doctor to check it out before dishing the pills out. New SHO's will probably know less them you, don't take the scripts at face value. Keep up to date on your chosen branch and drop something new you've just learn't in conversation preferably when the ward managers' around, it impresses and will lead to a quicker E-grade. Don't go for jobs that offer an instant E-grade though, if they do then obviously they can't get proper E-grades which means the ward is dodgy and for Godsake don't go for your first job in a nursing home whatever branch you are. Work for the NHS, Forces or one of the big private companies. Personally I think the NHS is the best to start of with. Nursing homes just give the impression that you've got no motivation or ambition, also it will limit your career. Leave the nursing homes when your burn't out or have fifty million kids to look after. If you've got new ideas, implement them, but get a higher grade to supervise you. Stops you doing something stupid and also stops the older staff from feeling alientated by the bright new whipper-snapper on the ward. Make sure though you've done your homework. Thats your lot, fairly obvious really, but suprising the things you do when your newly-qualified. Remember nobody will expect you to know anything until you've done the job for a few months so don't get stressed about it.

i don't understand
it' my birthday today and i am 30. i have spent the day in skills lab learning different procedures, any way that was fun. i have been visiting this website for a year or so i think - and all this stuff about being rascist is a total farce. i have not read anything rascist in content on this site - but what i have read is people not reading others comments properly and jumping down there throat and being what i can only describe as mean towards them. but it does make for a good read. and renton - be brave ask fiona out - the worst that can happen is that she'll say no! anyone check out the nursing times - a group of unison and rcn students went to whitehall last week to discuss the state of student nursing with sarah mullaly (maybe spelt wrong - sorry if my poor english as offended or been seen to be rascist). when sarah was asked why older students got an extra £50 a month - her reply was that they could have dependants and could do with the extra cash - a student then pointed out to her that older students with dependants were not entitled to the older students bursary she looked rather baffled. oh well i thought that was quite interesting. i'm off to spend my birthday money and to embrace being 30 byee

Hearsay is a dangerous thing
Hearsay is a very dangerous thing (and I don't mean the band). It is hard to know the truth of a situation that you didn't actually experience yourself. There are always two sides to the story. I don't think it helps the debate to relate stories of something that happened to a friend. I think it's irresponsible and just stirs up bad feeling. If you've had actual personal experience that you want to discuss then fine, otherwise you're just stiring!

Thorny one
Here is a thorny one, I know of a first year who is living in fear of their safety from a large contingent of overseas students in their cohort. Apparently all was very mutually supportive initially, until it came out in conversation that most of these students had embarked on nursing as it allowed easy entry to the UK. This student then asked if the group intended to complete training and stay in nursing, the answer was no. When this student suggested that the group's motives were less than public spirited, they found themself being labelled a racist. Owt as queer as folk....

Clearly a more important issue to be discussed in this forum is that I fancy the pants off a student nurse called Fiona who is at the Winter Street Campus at the University of Sheffield. I think she's in Sept. '99 group 4, and I need someone to put in the good word for me!

Bring back the good old days
How about a harmless bit of sexism just to stir things up a bit. I wish we could turn back the clock when nurses all wore dresses and the sight of a male nurse was shocking. Oh to be a patient in those days. It must have been worth being ill. I for one would've looked forward to my bed bath. Not any more the chances are I'd get a bloke with rough hands giving me a clean up. How disapponting but never mind bring back short skirts and throw the men out of nursing wa heeey

Is Suren BaKc in SEkrit
I recognise that wonderful but not quite correct English. He may not post in public anymore but its like red rag to a bull A bit of gosspip that can be misconstrued as been remotely racist, and the boy comes storming in like the Lone Ranger or Batman Yes folks its Super Suren champion of turning a non reacist comment into the most flagrent abuse of minority ethnic groups. Eton my back side, if you'd been to Eton matey whatever your ethnic background the quality of your written English would I believe be slightly better than the stuff you've written here. Nice to have you back Suren. Don't kid the regulars we know its you boy

Whoa! People
Found this site by mistake. Do you read before you post. I don't think Maurene saying she was proud of Canuck bashing. (What can you say about a country that likes beavers, that they haven't heard before.) I didn't read that SHE was antiblack, only that she was fed up about slow, lazy people, who expect to pass their course.

God, no wonder so many students fail coursework, the english within the context of this page is awful. Everyone try and chill a little bit, this page is way too deep. Reading through the letters I see everything has been taken out of context. People are not reading the letters properly and are reading too much into them.

in this instance you and your friends are the victims of self prejudices and ignorance. i wonder how you would feel if u was in a foreign country where english is not the first language and you have to do all your studies in that country's vanacular? would you and your friends cope? so think about how you would want to be treated in a situation like this? by the way look at your history and you would see the the blacks was very instrumental in the developing of the NHS and many services post war. they were invited to this country post war to help develop it so please respect them...cause without them i do not think you would be enjoying the luxuries that you have now.

- Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at 01:17:01 (BST)
to maureen
you have hit it on the head. by using your words " A while back there were some Canadians hitting the site and they got slagged off for being Canadians. One actually gave as good as she got." it demostrates that racism exists in this webpage. i am saddened that you feel so proud this took place. the issue about students being slow is not only black students have that problem. i am aware of many white students experience that and also many of them have not passed one assignment. so this is not a black issue. it is an issue that affects all students. so please get off your pedestal and learn to accept that great britain is a multi cultural society and you and your friends cannot change this. if it was not for the overseas nurses and students this county's health system would not be worth writing home to. so please stop this biggotry and learn to respect people and help where u can to develop these under achieving students and you may be surprised that you could learn from them as well. black or white we are all still going to be nurses and these blacks could be your colleagues in the ward and also if you go to a ward where by all the staff is non white and you are the only one, will you go off duty because you perceive them to be slow and underqualified. maureen racism is not good so please learn now or you suffer later.

Hot gossip???
I've got something to liven this page up a bit (well maybe anyway). There's a student nurse at the University of Sheffield (Winter Street Campus) called Fiona. I think she's in Sept '99 and I really really fancy her. Perhaps I'll ask her out before the end of next week? Let's see...

To Hobbes
Its sad but true, the page is dull. A while back there were some Canadians hitting the site and they got slagged off for being Canadians. One actually gave as good as she got. The whole thing returns to the one issue is it fair to coddle a slow, unprepared student at the expense of her class. The student then uses the colour of her skin as an excuse. The site jumped all over the person who said is this fair? In a perfect world, we'd all be colourblind and efficient. The not so perfect world allows it to perpetuate, student cries victim, educators are marked racist or prejudiced (ok my spelling may be off) and the rest of the class are just fed up of pulling an extra load. So who really is the victim; the student, the lecturer, or the classmates.

At the risk....
At the risk of being torn limb from limb by the regulars but after a four month hiatus it is deja vu all over again. Mysteriously mis-splett riting from people with BOGUS names, claiming that the Klan run nursing.... Sounds familiar? All HCA/NA whatever-A's are fat/lazy/idle or sainted/tireless/who-needs-an-education-to-be-the-next-Flo's.... Crap pay and no support, hell, the tragedy is that it is worse when you cross the finishing line. Then the malicious and evil rule and the slothlike work for you. Take away all your social life and freetime and the only thing you have to fear is the UKCC and people with names like jOhn SmITh....

I am glad that you have a good placement - I am lucky that all mine so far have been ok. My next one is Urology and I have been chatting with a staff nurse on there, whom I know vaguely, and she has promised me thay all her staff look after students who visit the ward. This has been confirmed by other students, so I am quite excited about this placement in 4 weeks time. The one after that is my community placement, I can't wait for that one. Things seem to be hotting up now I am in my 2nd year - I am looking forward to my critical care placements after xmas too.

Boring and Racism
Don't care what you talk about, you just seem to be such a dour lot these days. I can see that the majority of you are going to be a big bundle of laughs when you hit the wards. John Hunter's post was pretty stupid too generalised and did little to elaborate on experiences he feels he has had. However the reply was also pretty dim. A Knee-jerk defensive reaction thats hardly going to tackle the issue of racism or open it up to debate. What you should of done is asked him for examples and to expand further on his views. The reply talks of "prejudice" and made it quite clear that he or she has prejudices' equally as big as Jon Hunter's. Its so easy to fight prejudice with prejudice and fan the flames of racisim. OK not a funny post, but something to think about.

racism
how sad that prospective nurse are so pro racism. do you individuals have really experienced anu racist attacks or have you been exposed to this low class of bullying and harassment. before you lie to justify that you was racially abused by blacks think are you telling the truth or are you using that as an excuse to cover your own racial prejudices. racism is not good. yes i agree you are entitled to your opinions and it your democratic right to voice your objections and you are entitled to your freedom of speech in a democratic multicultural society you live in. but it is immoral and wrong to use this to further your prejudices and racist attitude in the wards and university settings. racism is wrong from any sector

Agree with you totally, its become very PC. You can't have an opinion and if you dare to express your feelings, ur either sexist, racist, or anti-something. I might have to start reading the News of the World for some light comic relief.

There are 7 applicants to every student place available. This is due to the advertising campaign and the better pay. Unfortunately the resources are not there to teach additional students - yes we were the first June intake last year but there were only 20 of us taken on as the school is not big enough for a start and there aren't enough tutors to teach them. I for one am glad I got in last year!

I see Beverley Malone, our new gen sec is calling for more pay for nurses (good) but she dsays memebers don't want any more private sector in the NHS. I do agency because it suits me and we all knw its agencies keepnh the nhs going just now. So what do you want to happen to me Beverly, give up nursing? because I can tell you I'm never going bach to work for the NHS - or its useless managers.

What a belter
Hello Shirley, I do not know if it is illegal to wear a belt or not, but at the more than ancient Scarborough General hospital, the staff do still wear belts. However, at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General hospitals in Sheffield, which are both centres of excellence in certain areas, the staff do not wear belts. I think you can choose whether you wear a belt or not, but I'm sure no-one can force you. Personally I think that they are impractical and look stupid.

could someone please find out for me if it is now illegal to wear the belts with our uniforms. In Liverpool it is now only the students who have to wear belts with their dressess. I have been told under the health & safety policy that we should not wear them. I would be very grateful if anyone can respond to this question. Many thanks Shirley

what a bad word for the white middle class. we are not racist we are demoncratic and accept all. but in the work place they are the first to discriminate and carry the bullying torch. come on guys you know racism exists here and that people hide behind their skins to advance their prejudices. give us a break and face reality. racism is live and kicking in sizes and forms

what's the worst that could happen?
I have been a student nurse for nearly two years now. I have noticed that since starting nursing my libido has become almost none existent. Does anyone else have a similar problem with their sex drive, or am I sadly on my own? Also vodka tastes much better than it used to, especially the brand called 'Pretzki' from Netto. The cheaper the better methinks.

Recruitment
Yes I agree, my college has taken a 3rd intake and the library is just too small, when we are starting an assignment, the last intake still have all the books out and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get references. I have mentioned this in school, to no avail! Our school is attached to the hospital so has few facilities and the library is inadequate to say the least

- Tuesday, July 03, 2001 at 22:18:05 (BST)
hello there fellow students, how are you coping on the wards with this tropical weather? On the ward I'm working it's been over 30c and were told that the hospital had to save money, so they installed air conditioning ducts but no air conditioning !1 So they told us to open the windows and get fans from other wards! Well only one more shift then i'm off for seven weeks 3weeks in uni a reading week and then 3 weeks annual leave. Happy Holidays everyone.xxx

Recruitment at all costs
The goverments pre-occupation with recruiting large numbers of students at all costs seems to be a flawed one. The universities are accepting ever larger numbers of students into environments which are unable to sustain the large numbers of students. firstly there are not enough lecturers and the NATFHE strike earlier this year showed how under pressure the higher education system really is. secondly there are not enough resources, the library that i use was woefully inadequate anyway prior to the increase in the number of students. Now there will be an even larger number of students trying to use similar references to complete their assignments. Also the present recruiting drive has done nothing to solve one of the major problems facing student nurses anyway, the attrition rate is huge with approximately a third of the members of my course dropping along the wayside. Until the government sorts out the majority of problems facing student nurses (high prssure, financial struggles) then the attrition rate will remain high and it wont matter how many students are recruited if only a small percentage of them actually qualify.
