Assignments.
Help! I am a first year student nurse about to embark on my first assignments. I wonder if any experienced writers, could give me pointers on the best sites on the net and how not to bog myself down. My first essay is health and safety and I have chosen pressure sores. I have found a few sites but there seems so much information I cannot decide what to use. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Yours dispondent.

Student bursaries
Diploma students are not entitled to any loans or even bank loans, whereas, degree students do have that option. I think that getting less than £100 a week as a diploma student with no option on getting loans etc is disgusting.

Bursaries
Hi Christine, I was puzzled by your posting! I am a degree student at Hull University and I receive a bursary...along with a student loan I am dreading paying back on qualification. The diploma students appear to receive more money whilst training which is the only difference we have noticed. Pity there are devisive differences between the 2 courses doesn't help to unify us all as student nurses does it - sigh! We are after aiming for the same thing. Anyway hope your course goes well and best of luck.

Degree Nursing
Does anyone know why diploma students get a bursary and degree students don't?? We do the same work on the wards, yet have to have another job to subsidise ourselves, whereas the diploma students get paid for working on the wards. Doesn't seem fair to me.. Tell me your views on this....

Re:Which Union!!
Hi James, When I started my training we were also advised to join a union. In my opinion it doesn't matter what union you go for, it is just in case you need help or have any problems. Both Unions will support you!!!! I joined the RCN, because it is a union for nurses and run by nurses. Have Fun!!

Which Union?
I was advised to join a union when I started my nurse training in March, but I'm seriously reconsidering it. After all, all the RCN and Unison ever do is bicker and quarrel. For example, someone wanted information on violence amongst nursing staff, well both unions gave slightly wrong information and the RCN pounced on Unison because of this. For God's sake grow up the lot of you.

Male midwives
Nat, read your submission. I am an R.M.N. of 17 years. I have a 2 year old girl & 22 month old boy. I received excellent care at Paisley Mat. Paisley, Scotland. I know they have at least 2 male midwives there. I had little contact with them - but I must say that there care & compassion was even better than the females. Please follow your instincts! Perhaps females that have had kids themselves forget what its like - men will never know & I feel this gives them an increased level of empathy. Male midwives perhaps see the whole picture in a better way too- Socio-economic e.t.c. I am in no way putting traditional midwives down - as I stated earlier Paisley Mat. provided me with care second to none - but consider that women forget the pain & exhaustion very quickly! As a nurse myself you appreciate that you are very critical when you are in the "patient role" . I advocate male midwives +++ ! In my experience all other new mothers do not mind if their newborn is delivered by a male.

VIOLENCE
Rose was asking about violence amongst nursing staff, not against nursing staff. And what about violence by nursing staff toward patients? Unison, let's have another of your knee-jerk reactions......

Violence at work
UNISON also publish info on violence. We have a book called violence at work - a guide to risk prevention which I can send through the post if you e-mail me your address. We also have been running an annual survey since 1995 which shows levels of violence to nurses and other health workers. You also might want to check out the Department of Health's website www.doh.gov.uk, looking under Zero tolerance. This is a guide to managers on preventing violence and has a quite short but useful reference list. Is also available by phone: 0541 555455 The Health and Safety Commission publish a document, which Health and Safety Inspectors use as a basis when they go inspecting employers this is called "Violence and Aggression to staff in Health Services". A version of this for General Practice has been adapted by the Health Education Authority (now Health Development Agency) - the latter is free but the former should be available via your local library. HCAs to be seconded onto courses and retain salaries
I was working for a Trust in Bath up until March of this year as a nursing auxiliary. I was working part-time(25 hours a week), however I was Seconded onto a Diploma of Higher Education in nursing studies at UWE in Bristol. I am getting paid as a B grade. The only condition is that when I qualify I have to work for the Trust for 9 months.

Male Midwives
I remember about 10 years ago a male nurse - who was excellent in every way, professionally and personally - driven out of his midwifery training at the RUH in Bath.......by the sheer unpleasantness and hostility of the (female) midwives on the unit. They didn't seem to object to male obstetricians, though. You women can be curious creatures.

Nursing Portal now even better!
Just to let you know that the Nursing Portal has got even better. The Nursing Research Engine NRE now has over 8,800 links to nursing-related websites. The NRE has now been upgraded to allow boolean searching which means you can now use "AND", "OR" & "AND NOT" in your search to get exactly what you want.

HCAs to be seconded onto courses and retain salaries!
In an article which appeared in Nursing Standard December 1-7 1999 it was revealed that 16 English Univerities were to pioneer a new education system for nurses. The article went on to say that HCAs would be seconded onto courses by their health trusts, and retain their wages. Has anyone experienced difficulty with this, as it would appear that only HCAs with a full time contract i.e.47.5hrs can be seconded and retain their salaries. My trust is supposed to offer equal opportunity for all, however it would appear that in practice this is not happening. If anyone has experience of this or knows how to get round the problem I would be gratefull if you would let me know.

Nurses & Petrol Prices
We all know about the difficulties faced by nursing students with regards to travel allowances We all know about the difficulties faced by nursing students with regards to travel allowances Well Community nurses, midwives and health visitors are on average subsidising the NHS to the tune of £700 a year. The mileage rate paid is just 38p (less if you have a lease car) while the AA put the cost per mile at 53 per mile It's time for action, it's time to stand up for our profession. Nursing students can play their part by making a stand on travel allowances Join the campaign

Career info
You will need to decide if you want to do degree or diploma and where you want to study. Then you apply through UCAS for the degree and through NMAS for the diploma, sometimes you can apply direct to your institution for the diploma, especially now that there are 3 intakes per year. Applications for degree programmes have set application times - September 'til December. You will also need to decide which branch you want to do, Adult, Mental Health, Child or Learning Disability branch. You will need 5 GCSE's grade C or above, or, GNVQ Advanced, or I think they accept Access courses now, for the diploma programme. I started my diploma programme 2 weeks ago and I am loving it so far, it can be such fun!! Mind you I do my first placement in August so maybe I'll have changed my mind!! I hope not. Good Luck!! Angel of the North
The day at the Angel of the North was a great success and I think everyone concerned enjoyed it. But we also managed to get coverage from Tyne Tees Television, who wholeheartedly agreed with our cause and Mercury FM. Many reporters were there from the Nursing press so we will await what they have to say. In Huddersfield will be setting up a stall in the town centre in order to get people to sign the petition. We are also considering to ask Tesco's permission to collect petitions at their store. The next event (hopefully) will be a sleep out in Leeds - please contact me if you are interested. If we keep this up we must get our salaries reinstated! Or am I just really optimistic/broke and hopeful.

Think about it
Australian nursing students in my state are paid a MAXIMUM of $560 a month (220 pounds). This is Austudy (government grant) for those 25 and over. Anyone younger gets less. How much do you get?

Another milestone...
I joined 40 or so other student nurses from Huddersfield University and the University of Northumbria yesterday in the ongoing campaign to reinstate us onto a salary as our predecessors used to be. As a 1st-timer at campaigning, I thought the day was a success, and to be held at such a poignant location, will certainly add fuel to the campaign that's being heavily pushed by UNISON. Hopefully, the message will get through to the powers at be who should realize that we deserve recognition for our efforts if the UK is going to have nurses in the future.

Student Nurses Deserve Better
...was the clear message expressed by UNISON Nursing Students from Yorkshire & Humberside when they gathered with their colleagues from Northumbria at The Angel of the North yesterday. The students, all members of the Health Service Union, UNISON, are stepping up their campaign for the restoration of student salaries and employee status. The Yorkshire & Humberside students will be welcomed by their counterparts from the North East. UNISON & RCN Vs. Poverty
I went to the department of health building last Monday as a Unison rep to tell Allan Milburn about student nurse poverty. Before the meeting, we had a meeting with the RCN reps, and I am really pleased to say that we agreed on common ground which we took into the meeting with us. I don't know if Mr. Milburn will do anything about giving student nurses more money, but I feel progress was made because now Unison and RCN seem to be fighting the battle together, not against each other. Sarah Mullally seemed to be pretty clued up on student nurse poverty, and she said that the bursary wsa under review. Perhaps now something will be done about this important issue after all. There are still two worrying things, however, and they are that : 1) in the meantime student nurses may continue to drop out of their courses because of poverty, and 2) What is the NUS doing about all of this? They are the biggest student body in the country, and probably a union which we are all members of. If we got them on our side, imagine the progress we could make. As far as I am aware, they seem to be doing nothing at the moment.

RCN and UNISON meeting with Secretary of State for Health
On the 26 June, 5 RCN and 5 UNISON student representatives met with the Rt Hon Alan Milburn, MP. The main purpose of the meeting was for nursing and midwifery students to inform Mr Milburn about the current situation students face through out their education. Some of the issues raised were: - Financial Hardship - Accommodation - Clinical Placements - Travel Costs - Foreign Students. A number of you wrote to me with the concerns and issues. These were raised at the meeting and have been compiled within a written report which has also been given to the Secretary of State and Chief Nursing Officer, Sarah Mullally. A full report of the meeting will soon be available to RCN ANS members. Gemma Hale Student Sabbatical Officer RCN Student Member of Council Association of Nursing Students.
