-NHS TO TRAIN MORE NURSES AND MIDWIVES-
The creation of an extra 1,000 training places for nurses and midwives was
announced yesterday as part of a recruitment drive for more staff of all kinds
in the National Health Service. Alan Milburn, the Health Secretary, said a
£120 million investment in internal education services next year would also
enable the NHS to train more medical students and junior doctors in specialities
where there were vacancies. Announcing a nationwide recruitment campaign to
boost the numbers of nurses in areas where shortages were most acute, he also
signalled that the initiative was not a one-off exercise but would become
an annual feature of the NHS. The move came as the Government published figures
showing a 79 per cent increase in the number of applications for nurse and
midwifery training as a result of last year's campaign. The number of nurses
working in the NHS increased by 4,500 in 1999 to 304,560, equivalent to an
extra 3,000 full-time posts. (News extract from The Daily Telegraph - www.telegraph.co.uk)

Even though it isn't the
norm it does happen with surprising frequency, I've heard a ton of horror stories
about second year students having responsibility for whole wards on millennium
night and students being used as (seriously) underpaid aux's (and if were honest
that's pretty common, right?) Anyway lectures to get to and all that, speak
soon, Lee.

Re: Annoyed at
the system
Geez, you sound like you had a terrible
time Casbah! I am about to start the graduate nursing course, so I dont know
about 2.5 years into the course... however, I done a pre-nursing course a few
years back with ward placements and I had nothing but encouragement, infact
they were keen to teach me procedures I should have known nothing about at that
time! As for hardening yourself, what can you do? You are the student, they
have the control. Have you thought about completing your course at another college/uni,
I know that your experience of treatment of nursing students is not the norm.

Annoyed at the
system
Looks like I am the only person to rant
here ;-) I just dropped out of my nursing course 10 months before registration..insane
I hear you say?..Well..am I the only one who feels used and abused over the
last 2.5 years? Just wondered, in placements I felt useless and was made to
feel like I shouldn't be there and lost all my confidence..most times the tutors
were unhelpful to say the least, when I complained....though I have to say,
they all hugged me and said it would be ok when I asked for temporary withdrawal
from the course due to flailing confidence. Anyone got any views on how I can
harden myself to the treatment on placements for when I go back? :o) Luv, Casbah

of bladder instillation verse bladder scanners or suprapubic catheters to measure
residual urine after surgeries such as bladder suspenions. I would love to hear
what other hospitals are doing. What's your experience. Email ASAP!! Thanks.

Debates?
Geez, glad not to see "femals who bath
men why?" as the last submission on here (even if it was the administrator who
replaced it :-)) Come on everyone, write something, it'd be great to have a
discussion here - so long as it isnt with the afore mentioned author! Talk soon!

Pleeeeeease help me!!!!!!!!!!
I submit a plea for help, I am currently
studying for my DipHE in the Adult branch and we have just been hit with an
assignment essay which has lost me totally. The title of the essay is 'The desire
to care is a Human Attribute' and, even though it sounds simple enough I can't
find any info on it so if any of you kind people out there could help me I would
be in your debt forever, hey I might even buy you a drink, so please, friends,
student nurses, countrymen(or anyone abroad) please help me before my head explodes
from looking around and finding nothing, Cheers, Lee

Australia
Dear students I am an editor of a student
newsletter that runs Australia wide. I am looking for a global view as well
as an Australian view. Issues, news, items of interests or anything else you
can think of that is related to nursing would be very useful. Some examples
could be the cost of studying in Britain, job or scholarship opportunities,
the logistics of studying, the relationships between students and your lecturers
or those already qualified and is it all really worth it? In Australia we are
trying to find out why rates of retention are so low. There are also concerns
that our health care system is not meeting the needs of people. Any help would
be fantastic! You can email me at holleran@dcsi.net.au or write a letter to
me at PO Box 366 Drouin Victoria 3818 Australia. Thanks very much for your time!
